PSP moves "Suhaili" for Sir Robin Knox-Johnston's fortieth anniversary celebrations
Posted: 27 April 2009
Sir Robin Knox-Johnston has entrusted PSP with moving his famous and well-loved yacht “Suhaili” up to St Katharine Docks. It was in “Suhaili” that he made his historic round-the-world voyage in 1969.
Forty years ago, Sir Robin made history when became the first person to sail single-handed and non-stop around the world. Up until then, it was Sir Francis Chichester who had made the longest non-stop voyage and he had had to make one stop in Australia, where it was discovered that his boat needed a major re-fit. No-one really knew whether a yacht could actually go for 30,000 miles without a re-fit – or whether a person could physically make the journey, either. Sir Robin’s epic journey became one of the last great adventures around the world – and he did it in “Suhaili”.
To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of his extraordinary voyage, Sir Robin asked PSP to move her from her home berth up to Tower Bridge at St Katharine Docks, where his achievement was celebrated and VIP guests wondered again how he did it in “Suhaili”.
In 1995, Sir Robin founded Clipper Ventures plc, a marine events company, of which he is still Chairman. Among other things, the company now operates the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race. PSP is proud to be associated with the 2009-10 race, for which it is the official logistics partner. As one of the leading freight forwarders in southern England, PSP will provide logistical support for the seventh edition of the race which starts from the Humber on 13 September.
