PSP ships around £1m worth of boats to Hampshire

Posted: 21 May 2010

A SHIPMENT of 30 ocean rowing boats, worth between £30,000 and £50,000 each, are being transported from the Caribbean to the UK by Hampshire-based company, PSP.

The vessels belong to participants of The Woodvale Challenge Atlantic Rowing Race, an adrenaline-filled and gruelling rowing race from La Gomera to Antigua. The teams set off on January 4 for their intrepid journey across the ocean and the last team crossed the line on May 2. Competitors are now returning home and organisers, Woodvale Challenge, have entrusted PSP with returning the precious ocean rowing boats and equipment to the UK.

The firm has already safely transported 19 of the boats from St John’s to Hampshire and will transport the remainder in June.

PSP worked with its representative in St Johns to complete all the export documents, load the boats into the containers and ship them across the Atlantic to Portsmouth, where it handled the difficult British Returns custom clearance. The firm then unloaded the precious cargo, transported it to Southampton and arranged easy collection for the teams.

Nikki Holter, from Woodvale Challenge, said:

“Because some of the teams use their boats as an asset to secure loans, it is very important that they are returned in pristine condition. They are worth between £30,000 and £50,000 each and PSP has made sure every one has come back without a scratch.

“Also, due to the nature of the challenge, organising the shipping often has to be done extremely quickly and at the drop of a hat. However, this hasn’t phased PSP and they have been the best freight forwarding company we have ever dealt with. This is the fastest our shipments have ever gone through customs and everything has been incredibly organised.”

PSP’s Managing Director, Frank Dixie, added:

“Being a privately-owned company we can be incredibly flexible, which is exactly what was needed to get the boats back quickly and safely. Transporting 30 large ocean rowing boats from the Caribbean to the UK is no mean feat, but using our expertise from working with the likes of the Clipper Round the World Race we are able to do just this.”
